NYC Summer Guide: May

13051507_1114421031914136_2071704971924275895_nFinals are over and my favorite season in NY has begun: summer! Summer in NYC means free concerts, free festivals, and free entertainment. The season kicks off with Fleet Week when thousands of recently deployed sailors, marines, and coast guards visit the city for a week at the end of May. The week-long celebration is punctuated by numerous opportunities for New York residents to meet and interact with these soldiers. You can also tour the military ships for free at docks in Manhattan, Staten Island, and Brooklyn. This year, the end of Fleet Week overlaps with Memorial Day weekend which marks the beginning of summer for many New Yorkers. Officially, this weekend is supposed to be about honoring soldiers who died while serving the country at the Memorial Day Parade. Unofficially, many people take advantage of the numerous events organized during this time long weekend to party and celebrate. People with money or connections spend the weekend in the Hamptons—an affluent town outside of NYC—at exclusive parties. Those of us who are not into the Hampton party scene, take advantage of the huge department sales, free fairs, and open beaches during this weekend. As a Brooklyn native, I’m particularly fond of stuffing myself full of BBQ and funnel cake at the Kings County Fair but there is not a shortage of fun activities to partake in at the end of May in NYC. And the amount of events in June just ups the ante…
